Influence of the Media
The influence that the media has over our minds is incredible, and lately very dangerous. The average American watches about 4 hours of TV per day (about 28 hours per week or a nonstop 2 months per year) compared to the average 3.5 minutes parents spend in meaningful conversation with their child. Wait, what?! Let me repeat that:
The average time an American watches TV per DAY: 4 HOURS
The average time an American parent spends in
meaningful conversation with their child per WEEK: 3.5 MINUTES.
Wow. We have some work to do.
We are subjected to a lot of media including television, magazines, internet and radio. There are shows about people who are too skinny, too fat, addicted, wanna-be models, wanna-be body builders, etc. And when those shows cut to commercial we see ads for diet pills (you know how I feel about those), diet food, makeup, clothes, hair, exercise equipment, and on and on and on…
The funny thing is, that no matter how smart you think you are, how confident, how “above others influences”, there are things in the media that will actually make you think twice about something you already know. The way information is presented, with tiny bits of science blown so out of proportion it’s insane, can actually get your brain thinking it’s true. How many people have heard of “The Blood Type Diet” or “The Lemonade Cleanse” or “Acai Berry” juice, pills, etc. I have been asked about all of these and many more by people who are in the health and fitness field and by those who aren’t. My point is that its very hard to sift through all this information when we don’t know who or what is actually credible. More on that topic in another post.
What concerns me is the youth, whose minds are still very impressionable and quick to jump to conclusions about themselves and their own bodies, which in turn severely impacts self-esteem and confidence. Let me show you what I mean:
The Dove Campaign is absolutely fantastic and I applaud Dove for stepping up and taking on the responsibility of showing young girls positive role models. The statistics of dieting and eating disorders among young girls is horrific and it gives me goosebumps just thinking about how staggering the numbers are. As adults, we all have a responsibility to set an example for our children, friends, peers, acquaintances and yes, even strangers. Accepting and loving yourself just the way you are can sometimes seem hard to do, but think about why its hard. Is it because you don’t look like the lingerie model on the billboard? Well if you watched that video you should know that model doesn’t look like that either.
God created each and every one of us the way we are for a specific reason. We are all not meant to look the same! Now, if you’ve not treated your body well, and it has morphed into something you don’t recognize, then you can work to get back the body God intended for you (my friend Paula calls it her “inheritance weight”). Being happy and healthy is what matters, not your pant size or a number on the scale.
Take today to walk with your head held high, and a smile on your face. The way you carry yourself on a daily basis has more influence over someone’s impression of you than the way you look. No matter what you might think. Do this in your own life and it may rub off on a child or a teenager you didn’t know was watching.
Blessings,
Ashley

Lose weight, burn fat and build muscle!

First of all, for anyone that has ever taken a diet pill or even thought about taking a diet pill, let me tell you this: you are smarter than that. If no one ever instilled in you that you are an intelligent and wonderful human being, let me be the one to do it. You are beautiful (or handsome for the fellas), just the way you are, and you are smarter than that.
Second of all, despite what you might think, doughnuts or whatever you choose to eat too much of, do not go directly to your thighs. Seriously, they just don’t. It takes many doughnuts, and many reactions inside the body, to put cellulite on your legs, or excess weight on your body. It takes time for that to happen. So you are severely insulting your own intelligence, and mine, when you go to buy a pill (or ask me to prescribe you one), that will “melt away the fat” overnight. Let me just show you some of the awesome claims of real diet pills: Please note the sarcasm…
“It works like magic, but until recently it was not available to the public…Lose 10 pounds in 10 days, Guaranteed!”
Seriously? Like we’ve been hiding the secret formula and just now released it?
“Weight loss breakthrough! Fast. Effective. Safe.”
According to whom? And if that was true, why do we still have an obesity problem?
“Worlds strongest fat-burner!”
Wow, the worlds strongest? I can’t believe there is a pill that just burns fat…
“The only FDA approved OTC pill! NO SIDE EFFECTS!”
Yeah, I went there. And no, I don’t approve…even if the FDA does.
“The hottest extreme biochemical fat-burning agent is finally here. Now is the time for you to get absolutely ripped beyond belief with this scientifically advanced formula.”
HAHAHAHA! I can’t even think right now I’m laughing so hard…
“From frumpy to FANTASTIC! _______ isn’t a piece of clothing or a fashion accessory, in fact it will make you look better!”
Being seen with this bottle of crap will in fact make you look stupid.
Ok, ok, all joking aside, diet pills are not only idiotic, but they are very dangerous. As many of you probably heard, Hydroxycut was recalled by the FDA recently following the DEATH of a 19 year old male, and 23 other reports of liver damage, seizures; cardiovascular disorders; and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.
And I’m sure you all remember Ephedra, an ingredient in many diet pills in the past, was also banned by the FDA following serious health issues and death. An Orioles pitcher, Steve Bechler, died from complications related to ephedra.
Taking diet pills is like taking crack, and even Whitney knows that crack is whack. Diet pills are filled with stimulants, “natural” weird forms of ingredients all put together to act like stimulants, and tons of caffeine. THEY ARE BAD FOR YOU AND DO NOT WORK.
Losing excess weight or toning areas of your body that you aren’t happy with is going to take hard work and patience. The weight didn’t come on overnight, so it won’t come off overnight either. Sorry, I know “Hard work and slow, steady progress for effective weight loss” isn’t as sexy or exciting as some of those claims up there, but it’s true. So instead of wasting $90 bucks on something that might kill you, why don’t you use that money to invest in yourself by seeing a dietitian, or buying yourself that “expensive” produce you always claim you cant afford…
You are an intelligent and wonderful human being, and I care about you. Yes, you.
Blessings,
Ashley

Overall Health - Swine Flu
What I wanted to discuss today was the outbreak of the Swine Flu that has now hit the US. Even though I am a dietitian, and most of what I talk about is food and nutrition related, that doesn't mean that eating balanced and in moderation will prevent you from being sick. If this is the first you're hearing of The Swine Flu, make it a personal goal to try and check a newspaper, news website, or maybe just interact with another human being at least once a day....just kidding, I'm being a brat...but seriously...you can read right?
The Swine Flu is a new virus that our medical professionals have not seen before, therefore humans do not have any immunity to it. Our bodies have never seen it before, so they don't know how to fight it. The symptoms are almost exactly the same as "The Flu" that we are used to getting and fighting off, so if you think you may be coming down with the regular flu, see the doctor immediately, do not go to work, wash your hands and be overly cautious. Your doctor will most likely take swabs of your nose and throat and send a sample to be tested to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control).More detailed information can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ but here are some quick facts:
- 20 Cases have been reported so far in the US: California (7), Kansas (2), New York (8), Ohio (1), Texas (2)
- You CANNOT catch Swine Flu from eating pork. It is NOT transmitted this way. Cooking pork to 160 degrees kills Swine Flu just like it does other bacterias.
- Over 100 People in Mexico have died from Swine Flu so far
- There are 2 antiviral drugs - oseltamivir and zanamivir - that are able to treat and prevent infection from Swine Flu
- Wash your hands often, sneeze into kleenex and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
According to the CDC, at this time, there are four main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, and H3N1. However, most of the recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.
Be healthy by being aware of the health risks out there, those caused by poor lifestyle choices and those that we have no control of like viruses. Wash your hands, eat well, and listen to your body.
Ok, off to wash my hands and continue my conference! And as a side note, any of you who know me well know that I have a random but passionate interest in viruses and microbiology (so much that I paint them...seriously, my poor parents have a beautiful Lassa Virus hanging in their house) so if you ever have spare time, the CDC's website has amazing information on all types of viruses - rare and common - as well as a plethora of wonderful health information: http://www.cdc.gov/.

Junk Science
My point is this: be smart enough to be skeptical.
The ADA put out a great list of the "10 Red Flags of Junk Science" that can be found at www.eatright.org along with lots of other great (and reputable) nutrition information.
While registered dietitians are your best source of advice when it comes to food and nutrition, you can learn to cut through the clutter of conflicting nutrition health claims and find the facts. Watch for the “Ten Red Flags of Junk Science”:
1. Recommendations that promise a quick fix.
2. Dire warnings of danger from a single complex study.
3. Claims that sound too good to be true.
4. Simplistic conclusions drawn from a complex study.
5. Recommendations based on a single study.
6. Dramatic statements that are refuted by reputable scientific organizations.
7. Lists of “good” and “bad” foods.
8. Recommendations made to help sell a product.
9. Recommendations based on studies published without peer review.
10. Recommendations from studies that ignore differences among individuals or groups.
For more information about any food-related statement, product or service, contact a registered dietitian.

Antioxidants
“Blueberries are good for you because they have lots of antioxidants.”
“…oh, I’ve heard that. What’s an antioxidant?”
“…umm, stuff that’s good for you that’s in blueberries…it like, helps you age slower…”
“Yeah but what is it? Is it like a vitamin or something?”
“…umm, I dunno…yeah probably.”
Ok, so I know lots of you have heard of “antioxidants” before, and we’ve all seen the word written all over boxes of food and bottled drinks and lord knows what else (clever marketers). But how many of you have heard someone tell you that they are good for you, and be able to explain what it actually is? I bet you’d have a similar conversation to the one above with half of Americans who preach antioxidants daily. I want you to start thinking of nutrition as science, because that’s exactly what it is, and when we think from a science angle – you have to keep asking why, how, what, where, etc.
Big, long scientific terms like “macronutrient”, “polyunsaturated”, “glycogenolysis” and “antioxidant” are really just big words for simple meanings. For instance, “macro” means “big” and “nutrient” refers obviously to the nutrition present – so a macronutrient is just a nutrient that we need in large quantities in our body. Similarly, “anti” means “against, or opposed to” and “oxidant” refers to the process of oxidation (when a molecular process in the body causes and increase in oxygen). So an antioxidant would be what? Something (a molecule) that stops the process of oxidation. See, learning isn’t so bad!
Ok, so we know that an antioxidant is a molecule that stops the process of oxidation. What’s the next question?
What is oxidation? And why do we need to stop it?
Oxidation is a chemical reaction that happens inside our bodies and outside our bodies daily. In the process, electrons are transferred, which increases the oxygen present. Some oxidation reactions can produce free-radicals, which are molecules with unpaired electrons. Since electrons are being moved from one substrate to another during oxidation, some can be left unpaired, causing the molecule or element to be highly reactive. These free-radicals running around can kick start a chain of events causing damage to cells in our body. Damaged cells inside the body are not good, and have been linked to chronic disease states and illness, including cancer.
What antioxidants do, is they go in and fill in that missing electron, making the free-radical whole again. So you can imagine with pollution in the air, chemicals and pesticides in the water we drink and food we eat, sun damage to our skin, there is a lot of cell damage that happens to our bodies that leave plenty of free-radicals running around. The point is, we need lots of antioxidants!
Where can you find antioxidants?
Tufts University did an ORAC analysis (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) on common fruits and veggies. Here are the top picks based on ORAC units per 100 grams (about 3.5 oz).
Fruits
Prunes -- 5570
Raisins -- 2830
Blueberries -- 2400
Blackberries -- 2036
Strawberries -- 1540
Raspberries -- 1220
Plums -- 949
Oranges -- 750
Red grapes -- 739
Cherries -- 670
Kiwi fruit -- 602
Grapefruit, pink -- 483
Veggies
Kale -- 11770
Spinach -- 11260
Brussels sprout -- 1980
Alfalfa sprouts -- 1930
Broccoli Flowers -- 1890
Beets -- 1840
Red bell pepper -- 1710
Onion -- 1450
Corn -- 1400
Eggplant -- 1390
Now, its not just the antioxidants in the foods that will help repair cell damage, but the combination of essential vitamins and minerals with antioxidants that will lead to an overall healthier life.
Go eat some antioxidants and enjoy!

Ashley

The Secret World of Eating Disorders: Part One
Disclaimer: The information appearing in this article is to provide readers with a sense of urgency and understanding around the seriousness of eating disorders as a disease. It in no way promotes eating disorders for weight loss, and it will not provide specific details into ED behaviors or numbers. Eating disorders are fatal and require professional expertise and treatment. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
Anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, night eating, hoarding, chew and spit, orthorexia, over exercising, fasting, laxatives, lying, stealing, hopelessness, emptiness, and death.
An eating disorder is not something you try for weight loss. It is not something that one wishes upon themselves or anyone else. It is a serious and life-threatening disease that affects your friend, your neighbor, cousin, brother or other. Eating disorders are psychological diseases that present themselves in a physical way. However, this doesn’t just mean that the ones who struggle are the ones who resemble skeletons walking around with a diet soda. People come in all different colors, shapes and sizes, and so do eating disorders.
In this part 1, I want to share some statistics, and some basic information to reflect the seriousness of this disease.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 women struggle with an eating disorder of some kind, whether it is anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder, or somewhere in between.
10% of female college students suffer with eating disorders or disordered eating, of which, over half struggle with bulimia nervosa.
10-15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males. And those are just the ones that have actually admitted they struggle with an eating disorder; as it has a reputation to be a disease that only affects women. When in fact, there are thousands of males that struggle in secrecy every day.
80% of 13 year old girls have attempted to lose weight.
A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported that 5 – 10% of people with anorexia die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20% will be dead after 20 years and only 30 – 40% ever fully recover.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness.
Outpatient treatment for eating disorders costs about $8000 per week, if not more.
The statistic for deaths per year from eating disorders would be inaccurate because on death certificates, cause of death will not be noted as "Anorexia Nervosa" or another disorder. Instead it will say "Multiple Bilateral Pulmonary Thromboemboli" for multiple blood clots in the lungs, or "Myocardial Infarction" for a heart attack. Eating disorders are a fatal disease, it is not a matter of if you will die, it is when you will die. Eating disorders are a form of slow suicide.
An eating disorder can effect each organ system to the point of failure. Cardiovascular system is stressed and heart rate can slow to the point of stopping beating. The heart muscle itself can also shrink, causing huge danger due to the same large volume of blood now pumping through a smaller heart. Electrolytes are thrown out of balance from continued bingeing and purging behaviors which can effect cell function throughout the entire body. Tears in the esophagus can require surgery and rotting of the teeth cause many patients to have many or all of their teeth removed and replaced with expensive vaneers. Hair loss, bone degradation, loss of intestinal function, and damage to the reproductive system are all possible with an eating disorder. It is possible that you will not be able to have children, or that you may require a colostomy bag (a bag that is permanently attached to your lower abdomen to catch feces being moved out of your GI tract) because your intestines shut down long enough to require them to be surgically removed.
And remember, and eating disorder is not something "to try" for weight loss. An eating disorder is a psychiatric illness. The human body actually responds to restriction of food (which includes not eating, or eating and then purging) by storing nutrients. Yes, it holds on to the nutrients you eat rather than using it for fuel and burning it. The weight loss you see is due to the body living off of fuel from not only fat cells, but muscle cells, tissue and organ cells. This damage can be irreversible.
If you, or someone you know, struggle with an eating disorder or display behaviors that may sound like that of an eating disorder, please reach out and ask for help. I am happy to help, or to set you up with another practitioner in your area that can also help.
Blessings,
Ashley
